Stress less in six steps

Stress less in six steps

Stress in small doses can be a good thing as it helps us to stay alert and focused. However, we live in a fast-paced world with huge demands on our time and high levels of pressure. By constantly living in this state of tension, we place our emotional and physical health at risk. Stress can also lead to mental health problems that include depression and anxiety. This is why it’s so important to manage your levels of stress, which you can do in six steps.

Step 1:

To find out where your anxiety comes from, analyse your situation. Think about your work life and your home life and identify the sources of your stress. Write these all down so that you have a list.

Step 2:

Take a good look at your list and cross off the things that you have no control over, so you can rather focus on the things that you can actually change.

Step 3:

Now you need to put an action plan in place to deal with each situation. Establish priorities and set clear boundaries for your personal and professional life. Just because you can check your work emails from home, doesn’t mean you should.

Step 4:

It’s hard to say “no” but you need to learn how to do it. It’s in our nature to want to please people but it can be to our detriment. For your own happiness and productivity, it’s important that you can say “no”.

Step 5:

Find relaxation techniques that work for you, and incorporate them into your life. Whether it’s going for a run, playing a musical instrument, reading or meditating – find an activity that calms your mind and make time for it each day.

Step 6:

Revisit your plan from time to time. Your life changes as you get older and while some issues may no longer worry you, new stresses will undoubtedly appear.

Everyone feels and handles stress in different ways, which is why it’s important to look at your situation and deal with the unique issues in your life.
